The Secular Institute of Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ (SIM) for laywomen originated in Assisi, Italy, in 1919. It was founded by Armida Barelli, a laywoman, and by Father Agostino Gemelli OFM. The institute received definitive Papal approval in 1953.

The Missionaries make profession of the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience according to the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi in a completely secular condition of life. They give witness to gospel values in their family, church, work, civic and social environments.
